Young River Red Gum in Rural Landscape near Nyngan NSW Angie White

A likely young River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) stands among dry grass near Nyngan in central-western New South Wales. Its smooth, pale trunk displays patches of cream, grey and reddish-brown bark beneath an open canopy of narrow leaves. Soft mist obscures the background, separating the tree from the surrounding grassland and scattered eucalypts. River Red Gums commonly grow beside rivers, creeks, floodplains and other areas influenced by periodic flooding. They occur extensively across mainland Australia and form an important part of many inland riparian ecosystems. Mature trees provide habitat, nesting hollows and shelter for numerous native animals. Nyngan lies beside the Bogan River within an extensive pastoral and cropping district. Remnant native trees and riparian vegetation provide shade, shelter and habitat throughout these working landscapes. They also contribute to biodiversity and help maintain healthier agricultural environments.
