Sunset over Shark Bay at Francois Peron NP in WA Robert Frew

At sunset, a line of seabirds gathers on a low rocky outcrop extending into the calm waters of Shark Bay, creating a striking silhouette against the fading light. The golden glow of the evening sky reflects softly across the water, while layers of cloud stretch along the horizon. The birds rest quietly on the exposed rocks, taking advantage of the sheltered conditions as daylight draws to a close. The simplicity of the scene, with its muted colours and peaceful atmosphere, captures the natural rhythms of coastal life in one of Western Australia's most remarkable marine environments.

Located within François Peron National Park, this section of Shark Bay forms part of a World Heritage-listed region recognised for its exceptional biodiversity, marine ecosystems and abundant birdlife. The park provides important habitat for migratory shorebirds, seabirds and numerous marine species, including dolphins, dugongs, turtles and rays.

Known as Wulyibidi in the Malgana language, the Peron Peninsula forms part of the traditional Country of the Malgana people, whose connection to these coastal landscapes and waters extends back thousands of years.
