Riders Gather for the Kilkivan Great Horse Ride, Queensland Richard Cox

Horse riders assemble in the arena during the Kilkivan Great Horse Ride, one of South-East Queensland's best-known celebrations of Australian bush culture. Dozens of riders mounted on horses of various breeds wait together before the start of an event, creating a colourful display of horsemanship, community spirit and country tradition. Beyond the arena, horse floats, caravans and spectators illustrate the festival atmosphere that attracts participants from across Queensland and interstate each year. Bright afternoon light illuminates the horses and riders, while mature gum trees provide a distinctly Australian backdrop. The image captures the scale and camaraderie of this iconic gathering, where families, recreational riders and experienced horsemen and horsewomen come together to celebrate a shared passion for horses and rural life.

For more than 40 years, the Kilkivan Great Horse Ride has been one of Queensland's premier equestrian festivals. Best known for its flagship 30-kilometre trail ride and colourful Saturday Main Street Parade, the three-day event also features barrel racing, heavy horse demonstrations, bush poetry, camp cooking, live entertainment and family activities. The festival continues to preserve Australia's rich horse-riding traditions while providing an authentic country experience for riders and visitors alike.
