Submission Guidelines (detailed guide)

To help keep AgriPix a reliable and professional image library for everyone who uses it, please follow these guidelines when submitting your images.

Most images submitted will be from SLR/DSLR/mirrorless cameras, however images from your good quality phone camera or tablet are accepted if they meet the technical and compositional criteria. The same applies for video.

And if you’re shooting on film, we’ll tip our hats and assume you know a thing or two the rest of us don’t!

Photos and videos are automatically watermarked with the AgriPix logo when they’re uploaded, so please don’t include your own logos or signatures.

Topics covered:

  2. Content Requirements
  3. Compositional Quality and Aesthetics
  4. AI Policy
  5. Metadata Selection Using Pull-Down Menus
  6. Model & Property Releases

  8. Pro Tips for Success

1. Technical Specifications

Photos:

  • Accepted photograph formats: PNG (accepted) JPEG (preferred – highest quality, sRGB colour space)
  • Minimum file size: 3 MB
  • Maximum file size: 75 MB
  • Ideally 20–40 MP

Note: Files outside this range will not be accepted by the upload system.

Aspect ratios

Standard aspect ratios preferred to maximise buyer appeal.

Common ratios used everywhere:

  • 3:2 – Standard photo rectangle (website images, brochures, case studies)
  • 4:3 – Balanced rectangle (corporate websites, newsletters)
  • 16:9 – Wide / cinematic (website hero banners, landing pages)
  • square (1:1) – Equal width and height (social media marketing posts)

Pro Tips:

  • Shoot in RAW + JPEG
  • Keep camera set to 3:2 (full frame)
  • Compose with cropping in mind (e.g. 16:9 or square)
  • Crop later during editing

This gives you maximum flexibility and resale potential.

Image size

For best results, images should ideally have a long side between 4000 and 7000 pixels. This ensures files are large enough for professional use while remaining easy to upload and download.

Videos:

  • Accepted video formats: MP4 (accepted) or MOV (preferred)
  • Max size: 500MB
  • Minimum 1080p (Full HD). 4K preferred

2. Content Requirements

  • Images must reflect real Australian agriculture or Rural life
  • Categories may include Farm Production images of crops, livestock, machinery, landscapes, ag-tech, workers, farm infrastructure, and/or Creative images of Aussie farm life and rural landscapes
  • Great ag images often come from simply being in the right place at the right time, something farmers have known for generations
  • Avoid submitting images with visible brand names, logos, or copyright-protected designs (unless you have removed them or obtained proper releases)

3. Compositional Quality and Aesthetics

  • All photos and videos must be sharp, well-composed, and in-focus
  • Avoid excessive filters or post-processing
  • No watermarks or timestamps
  • Natural lighting and accurate colour representation are preferred
  • Clear Subject and Focal Point
    • Subject should be easily identifiable and visually engaging.
  • Good Framing and Composition
    • Follow composition principles: rule of thirds, leading lines, balance, negative space
  • No Distracting Backgrounds
    • Remove clutter or unwanted objects that draw attention from the subject
  • Natural Lighting
    • Prefer soft, well‑lit conditions. Harsh midday light often reduces image quality but may also be an effective creative device depending on the subject matter.
  • Commercial Appeal
    • More thorough descriptions telling the story of your image may have higher appeal

An image that just meets the minimum technical and aesthetic requirements can have its market appeal boosted by a great story.

Real farming doesn’t always happen in perfect light or perfectly clean boots, and that’s part of the story worth capturing.

Where agricultural imagery differs from our cousins in the big smoke:

The main difference is not technical quality but content expectations.

Agricultural buyers often value authenticity over polish so a slightly rough setting can still sell well if it looks real and credible.

Sharp, well-exposed images are always appreciated. Dust and mud in the paddock are fine, just try to keep it off your lens.

Composition expectations are slightly different.

Urban commercial images often emphasise:

  • perfect lighting
  • studio-style composition
  • staged scenes

Agricultural buyers often prefer:

  • natural lighting
  • real farm activity
  • environmental context
  • working machinery

But the technical quality still must be high!

4. AI Policy

  • No AI-generated images
  • Images must be taken with a real camera or a smart device camera
  • AI tools may NOT be used even for minor edits, such as removing logos or copyrighted material
(See full AI Policy for details on the Resources page)
  • Any editing must be done using means other than AI (eg. removing logos)

5. Metadata Selection Using Pull-Down Menus

  • As part of the Image Upload process, contributors are required to complete a few key metadata fields using the provided pull-down menus (e.g. title, date, location, production type and a simple description).
  • To save you time, we have built a Bulk Image Upload option if you have a whole swag full of similar images you’d like to upload, but the metadata for these must all be the same.
  • Completing these metadata fields accurately helps your content appear in relevant searches and filter results, directly increasing its chances of being seen, selected, and licenced.
  • Submissions with incomplete or incorrect metadata may be delayed or rejected.

Each image must include:

  • Title
  • Date of capture
  • Production type (e.g., livestock, crops or horticulture)
  • Short, accurate description (e.g., 10-month-old grey Brahman bull, or 3-month-old first ratoon sugar cane)
  • State and region (e.g., NSW, Darling Downs)

Further optional fields are highly encouraged to add greater value to your images:

  • Location (e.g., “Ingham, QLD”), irrigation, fertiliser use, machinery, and soil type
  • These all have simple to use pull-down menus
  • If you’re unsure about any of these details, you can simply leave those fields blank

This only take a few seconds once you’ve done it a couple of times and will add significant value to your image.

We review submissions as quickly as possible, but occasionally we may be out of signal range, much like some of the places great rural photos are taken.

6. Model & Property Releases

  • Required for any images with identifiable people or taken from within private property (printable copies are available on the Resources page)
  • As per the Terms & Conditions, the onus is on you to collect a signed release form for each identifiable person or property in an image, or from a parent or guardian for each identifiable child (under 16)
  • You do not need to submit the release forms to AgriPix, but must keep any release forms on file in case any queries arise about the use of a person or properties in any of your images
  • You must agree to our terms and conditions including that you collected any necessary signed release forms with the corresponding image or your image(s) will not upload

7. Pricing and Download Sizes

  • You only need to upload one high-quality image and the platform will automatically generate multiple file sizes for buyers (e.g., web use, print, campaign)
  • Prices vary based on resolution and intended use — from low-res images (~AU$7.50) to high-res files and images offering exclusive licences (hundreds or more)

8. Pro Tips for Success

  • AgriPix will provide tip sheets (newsletters and blogs) about any specific in-demand images wanted
  • Upload seasonal and region-specific content to meet current buyer needs
  • Provide complete metadata to increase discoverability
  • Ensure your work stands out with storytelling and authenticity
  • Read more about what type of images are most in demand on the Resources Page – Images Wanted

Most importantly of all – Have Fun and Be Safe!

Let’s be real though. Stock photography probably won’t make anyone rich, but it can be rewarding in other ways. And if your images help you fill up the ute, buy a few groceries, or a couple of well-earned sherbets now and then, that’s a nice bonus for doing something you enjoy.

Your images will help inform, inspire, and support the future of Aussie agriculture, and we’re proud to have you as part of the AgriPix community.
