Originating from the United Kingdom, the Light and Lavender Sussex (or Coronation) are friendly breeds of chicken that makes for a great pet, meat or egg-laying chicken. These chickens produce upwards of two hundred eggs each year and are a fantastic meat bird. While other breeds of chickens like the Isa Brown and other hybrid layers can produce upwards of three hundred eggs each year, the Sussex are extremely docile and can make for a very interesting member of the family, or lunch. These large birds are quite heavy at 3.2kg, making them flightless and easy to keep. The free-range lifestyle of these birds definitely shows in their disposition, being carefree and almost joyful in their appearance. Scratching around in their expansive paddock, they pick and choose what and when they eat. The red comb on these Sussex is a telltale sign that they are healthy, happy and actively laying eggs.
