South African Pigeon Grass

South African Pigeon Grass Richard Cox

South African Pigeon Grass (Setaria sphacelata) is a widespread environmental weed found across Queensland’s landscapes. This densely tufted perennial grass can reach heights of up to two metres, producing distinctive spike-like seed heads adorned with golden-yellow bristles. It commonly invades wetland areas, where it forms thick, dominant stands that crowd out native vegetation and hinder natural plant regeneration.
