Horse Riders on the Kilkivan Great Horse Ride Trail, Queensland

Horse Riders on the Kilkivan Great Horse Ride Trail, Queensland Richard Cox

A long line of horse riders makes its way across open grazing country during the famous Kilkivan Great Horse Ride in South-East Queensland. Viewed from behind, the riders follow a winding trail through gently undulating paddocks bordered by native eucalypts, creating a striking scene that captures the scale and camaraderie of Australia's largest recreational horse rides. Riders of all ages and experience levels travel together at a relaxed pace, while horses of many breeds reflect the diversity of Australia's equestrian community. The elevated perspective emphasises the length of the procession as it stretches into the distance beneath Queensland's wide rural skies. The image celebrates the enduring connection between horses, people and the Australian bush while documenting one of the country's most iconic annual equestrian gatherings.

For more than 40 years, the Kilkivan Great Horse Ride has welcomed thousands of participants to its renowned three-day festival. The event's signature 30-kilometre trail ride traverses picturesque rural landscapes and remains the centrepiece of a program that also includes the Main Street Parade, barrel racing, heavy horse demonstrations, bush poetry, live entertainment and authentic country hospitality, making it one of Queensland's premier celebrations of bush culture.
