Wompoo Fruit-Dove Perched in a Rainforest Tree, Queensland Leesa Baldwin
A Wompoo Fruit-Dove (Ptilinopus magnificus) perches quietly on a smooth tree branch, revealing its remarkable blend of colours. Brilliant green wings contrast with a rich purple breast and bright yellow underparts. A pale grey head, red eye and pink bill complete its distinctive appearance. Softly blurred rainforest foliage draws attention to the bird's vivid plumage and elegant form. The close composition highlights the species' striking colours and calm behaviour. Wompoo Fruit-Doves feed mainly on rainforest fruits and often move silently through the forest canopy in search of seasonal food. Their colourful appearance makes them one of Australia's most recognisable rainforest pigeons.
The Wompoo Fruit-Dove inhabits tropical and subtropical rainforests along Australia's eastern coast, from northern New South Wales to Far North Queensland. Healthy rainforest ecosystems provide the fruit these birds depend upon throughout the year. As they feed, they disperse seeds across the forest, helping regenerate native vegetation and maintain the biodiversity of Australia's unique rainforest habitats.
