A White-bellied sea eagle Leesa Baldwin

A White-bellied Sea-Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster) perches high in the branches of a eucalypt overlooking the coastal landscapes of Mackay, Queensland. The bird's striking white head and breast contrast with its broad grey wings and powerful hooked beak, highlighting the distinctive features of one of Australia's largest birds of prey. Sitting upright and alert, the eagle surveys its surroundings from an elevated vantage point, a behaviour typical of a predator that relies on keen eyesight to locate fish, waterbirds and other prey. The image captures the strength, composure and commanding presence that have made the White-bellied Sea-Eagle an iconic symbol of Australia's coastal and riverine environments. Its large size, broad wings and effortless flight make it a dominant aerial hunter across much of the continent.

Mackay lies on Queensland's central coast and is surrounded by a rich network of beaches, estuaries, wetlands, offshore islands and river systems that provide ideal habitat for White-bellied Sea-Eagles. These productive coastal ecosystems support abundant fish populations and nesting sites, allowing the species to thrive throughout the region.

The White-bellied Sea-Eagle remains an important indicator of healthy aquatic ecosystems and one of Australia's most admired raptors.
