Old fence post at sunset

Old fence post at sunset Katie O'Brien

In Canungra, South-East Queensland, an old fence post rises from a tangle of long grasses. It's the last light of day and the sky shows soft shades of pink, orange and purple.  The timber is weathered by decades of sun, rain and wind; it represents a working rural landscape, while a strand of fencing wire stretches into the fading distance. The shallow depth of field draws attention to the post’s worn texture and rugged character, contrasting beautifully with the gentle glow of the sunset beyond.

Old fence posts such as this are reminders of traditional fencing methods that shaped Australia's farming districts. These rough-hewn posts were often cut from local timber and fashioned by hand, which reflect the practical skills, hard work and resourcefulness of earlier generations. Their cracked surfaces, uneven edges and enduring strength tell stories of properties established long before modern materials became commonplace. Together, the fading light and enduring timber create a timeless scene that celebrates the heritage and character of rural Queensland.
