Coastal Carpet Pythons in Combat

Coastal Carpet Pythons in Combat Leesa Baldwin

A remarkable wildlife photograph captures two male Coastal Carpet Pythons (Morelia spilota mcdowelli) engaged in a ritualised combat display during the breeding season. One python raises the front of its body high above the ground while pressing against its rival, both snakes intertwining in a contest of strength and endurance rather than aggression. This wrestling behaviour allows males to establish dominance and gain breeding opportunities without resorting to biting or venom. The contrasting cream-coloured underside of the raised python highlights the powerful muscles that support the display, while the intricate olive, brown and cream patterning of both snakes showcases the beauty of this iconic Australian species. The image freezes a rarely observed moment in the natural breeding behaviour of one of Australia's largest non-venomous snakes.

The Coastal Carpet Python is widespread throughout eastern Australia, inhabiting forests, woodlands, rocky escarpments, farmland and suburban areas. An important native predator, it helps regulate populations of rodents, possums and other small animals, contributing to healthy ecosystems. During the breeding season, males may engage in prolonged wrestling contests that can last for hours, with the victorious snake earning the opportunity to mate with a receptive female.
