The full moon

The full moon Leesa Baldwin

This striking photograph captures a Full Moon above Queensland’s Central Highlands during May 2024, when the Moon’s Earth-facing surface is completely illuminated by the Sun. At full phase, the lunar disc appears brilliantly bright, revealing an intricate landscape of ancient impact craters, rugged highlands and expansive dark volcanic plains known as maria, formed by lava flows billions of years ago. With the terminator absent during a Full Moon, shadows are minimal, allowing the Moon’s distinctive surface markings and contrasting geological regions to stand out in remarkable clarity. The surrounding black sky provides a dramatic backdrop that emphasises the Moon’s near-perfect circular form and timeless beauty, creating a captivating astronomical portrait. Queensland’s Central Highlands is highly regarded for stargazing and astrophotography because of its elevated geography, generally low humidity and minimal artificial light pollution. These favourable conditions produce exceptionally clear, dark skies, attracting amateur and professional astronomers eager to photograph the Moon, planets, the Milky Way and other spectacular celestial objects throughout the year.
