Australian king parrot (Alisterus scapularis), male Richard Cox
An Australian King Parrot (Alisterus scapularis) perches atop a weathered timber fence post in the cool mountain forests of Bunya Mountains National Park. The bird's brilliant scarlet head and breast contrast strikingly with its rich emerald-green wings and back, creating one of the most colourful displays in Australia's native birdlife. Its long dark tail, bright orange eye and sturdy curved bill are clearly visible as it surveys its surroundings from its elevated perch. The softly blurred background of forest foliage draws attention to the vivid plumage, while the aged fence post adds a rustic element that reflects the park's blend of natural and pastoral landscapes. Australian King Parrots are often seen feeding on seeds, fruits and blossoms and are known for their relatively calm nature around visitors.
Bunya Mountains National Park, located in Queensland's South Burnett region, protects one of the world's largest remaining stands of ancient bunya pines. Rising more than 1,100 metres above sea level, the park is renowned for its cool rainforest climate, spectacular lookouts, waterfalls and abundant birdlife, making it a popular destination for nature lovers, hikers and wildlife photographers.
