Pineapples: More Than Just a Tropical Treat!

(Originally posted 11th July ’25)

Despite what many tourists to Far North Queensland expect, these juicy gems grow low to the ground on short, spiky plants, and not in trees!

Well suited to the volcanic red soils of FNQ, pineapples thrive due to excellent drainage and mineral-rich earth. They’re also incredibly drought-tolerant, with thick waxy leaves that lock in moisture. Perfect for FNQ’s dry season.

FNQ pineapples are bursting with tropical flavour. Got a sugar craving? They’re sweet, tart and juicy. And they’re packed with vitamin C, as well as bromelain (a natural enzyme which aids digestion), and immunity boosting antioxidants. Pineapples can reduce inflammation, help with eye and bone health, and even reduce stress.

Try them grilled with honey and cinnamon for a caramelised dessert, or my personal favourite, diced into a zesty pineapple salsa with red onion, chili, coriander and lime juice. Such a great topping for fish tacos or grilled chicken.

And be sure to pack a few handfuls of dehydrated pineapple pieces for your next road trip. Best snacks ever!
